First one - April 2023


Hello,

This is the first devlog for YouTD2. We have been working on this game part-time for about 4 months and will start sharing regular updates in these devlogs. As this is the first one, we will tell you about the current status of the game.

Gameplay

The basics of the game are there. You can open a list of towers, select towers and build them in the world. Creeps will spawn in waves and follow a path. When creeps run past towers the towers will shoot at them. The systems for tower special behavior are also implemented. Towers will gain bonuses as they level up and they will apply additional effects to creeps like random extra damage, slows or other debuffs. When selecting a tower you can open it's tooltip to see it's current stats.

Assets


A lot of assets need to be made for the game because there are about 700 towers total! Currently about 10% of assets are complete.

To speed this up we have decided to use Midjourney to create the following assets:

  • Tower sprites
  • Tower icons
  • Item icons
  • Decoration tiles

Not all assets can be generated by Midjourney so currently we will hand-draw or hand-model the following assets:

  • Creep sprites
  • Special effects (explosions, magic glows, etc)

Tower sprites are generated by Midjourney because there are *a lot* of towers to make and Midjourney is well suited to generate static sprites. Midjourney is not good at generating animated sprites from multiple angles, so creep sprites will be hand-modeled in Blender and converted to sprites.

Tower scripts

Other than tower sprites, towers also need to be scripted. For tower scripts the workload is smaller because we are only translating tower scripts from original JASS language to Godot's GDscript. Currently about 20% of towers are scripted.
